Retractable Window Screens

At Comfort Windows & Doors, we custom-build and install retractable screens for every window type. Every screen is made to measure for your opening — no off-the-shelf fit, no gaps, no rattling. Our solutions are built to withstand Canadian seasonal extremes, maximize comfort, and maintain the beauty of your home.

Retractable Screen Options by Window Type

Casement windows swing outward, so the screen mounts on the inside of the frame and tucks away when you close the window. Our casement screens use spring-loaded hardware and overlap the full opening for a clean seal.
Awning windows open from the bottom and are designed for ventilation even in light rain. The screen accommodates the upward swing and retracts fully when the window closes.
Double hung windows let you open from the top or the bottom. We fit full screens for double hung windows and half-screens for single hung, sized to match whichever sash you use most.
Tilt-slider screens run on a horizontal track and offer full or half-screen options. They’re compatible with sashes that slide and tilt inward for cleaning.
Fixed windows don’t open, but their operable flanking units often do. We integrate retractable screens with the operable sections while leaving the fixed glass unobstructed.
For circular, triangular, trapezoidal, and European tilt-and-turn windows, we use frameless low-profile designs that sit flush with the frame when retracted.
We also install retractable screen doors for entry doors, patio doors, and sliding doors. Ask about screen doors when you request your quote.

Why Retractable Screens Last Longer Than Fixed Ones

Fixed screens sit exposed year-round. The mesh degrades from UV, the frames pit from road salt, and most GTA homeowners pull them off in October and store them in a garage corner where they bend.

A retractable screen spends most of its life sealed inside the cassette. The mesh doesn’t see sun when the window is closed. There’s no seasonal removal, no storage, and no spring reinstall. The hardware is rust-resistant, and the cassette keeps debris out of the mesh.

The result is a screen that typically outlasts two or three generations of fixed replacements.

Ventilation and Air Quality

Cross-ventilation through windows reduces summer cooling load — and retractable screens make it practical to keep windows open without bugs or debris coming in.

In Vaughan and the surrounding GTA, where summer humidity rises quickly and pollen counts have increased over the past decade, a screen that actually stays on the window makes a measurable difference to indoor air quality.

The cassette design also keeps the mesh cleaner between uses. Dust and allergens don’t accumulate on a screen that’s only deployed when the window is open.

Made to Measure for Your Windows

Every screen we install is built to your window’s exact dimensions. We measure on-site and account for the window style, the direction it faces, and the hardware finish on your existing windows. The screen should look like it came with the window, not like it was added afterward.

We also carry multiple mesh densities — standard insect mesh, finer pollen mesh, and solar mesh for south- and west-facing windows that get direct afternoon sun.

Common Questions

Yes. Retractable screens can be retrofitted to most window styles without replacing the window. If your frame is in good condition, we can usually add a screen in a single visit.
The screen stays retracted in winter — there’s nothing to remove or store. The cassette is weather-sealed and the hardware is rated for Canadian temperature ranges.
Extend the screen and wipe the mesh with a damp cloth. Because the screen is only deployed when the window is open, it accumulates far less debris than a fixed screen and rarely needs more than a seasonal wipe-down.
We stock standard fiberglass insect mesh, fine-weave pollen mesh, and solar-control mesh. The right choice depends on the window’s orientation and what you’re trying to block — insects, pollen, or afternoon sun. We’ll recommend a mesh at the time of measure.
Yes. We install retractable screen doors for entry doors, patio doors, and sliding doors. Ask about screen doors when you request your quote.
